ABILENE - Abilene Christian tennis will send its men's and women's teams to different locales this weekend for a pair of three-day invitationals. The men and head coach Hutton Jones travel west to Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico for the Balloon Fiesta, while the women and assistant coach John Walker visit the Metroplex for the SMU Invitational.
The entire women's team is expected to compete in Dallas beginning Friday morning against teams from across the nation such as Air Force, Gonzaga, Kansas State, Louisiana Monroe and Marquette. The Wildcats also get to see several Southland Conference teams from Incarnate Word, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, plus regional rivals Houston, UT Arlington and UT San Antonio.
ACU experienced a tough time at SMU last fall in terms of wins and losses as only three of their eight entrants left with winning singles records: Ansley Boarman, Jordan Henry and Lucile Pothier. Pothier – who next weekend competes solo at the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu – also went 2-1 in doubles alongside Whitney Williams.
The ACU men bring a partial team to New Mexico as Henry Adams, Nico Agritelley, Josh and Jonathan Sheehy all competed in singles last weekend at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa. Each of the Wildcats left the tournament with a 1-1 record.
Teams from Arizona, Air Force, Denver, New Mexico and New Mexico State all were part of last year's Balloon Fiesta and challenged a small Wildcats' roster that was composed of Paul Domanski, Jason Proctor, Cole Lawson and Sebastian Langdon. Lawson and Langdon each went 2-1 in their respective singles brackets, while the doubles team of Domanski and Proctor posted a 3-1 mark in the Gold Draw.
