ABILENE - Abilene Christian's men's tennis team competes together for the first time this fall season starting Friday when the Wildcats head to TCU's Friedman Tennis Center for the annual ITA Texas Regional Championships. First and second-round doubles matches begin 8:30 a.m. followed by first-round singles at noon.
The tournament is expected to conclude Monday morning with the main draw singles and doubles finals.
Every DI tennis team is invited to compete at regionals, and as such there's enough competition to fill a 128-man main singles draw and 64-team doubles bracket. All 10 Wildcats have been entered into the field and will face players in the early rounds from Baylor, Lamar, Rice, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UT Arlington and UT San Antonio.
ACU has done well at this tournament the past three seasons as last year's edition was highlighted by senior
Nico Agritelley's winning of the consolation draw over opposition from UT Rio Grande Valley, Lamar and SMU. The previous year Agritelley and doubles partner Gui Gesser advance to the main draw doubles quarterfinals, and as a freshman in 2013 he and
Jason Proctor made it to the consolation semifinals.
The 2014 tournament also saw
Marco Bensley and
Paul Michael Domanski reached the main draw's Round of 16 after posting an 8-7 upset win over an eight-seeded team from UTSA.
This fall, the Wildcats have seen their roster split for the entire season up until now as junior
Henry Adams, senior
Nico Agritelley and brothers Jonathan and Joshua Sheehy have traveled to tournaments hosted in Midland and Tulsa while the rest of the roster was sent to invitationals hosted by New Mexico State and New Mexico.
The doubles teams of the Sheehy brothers and Adams / Agritelley are competing together for the first time since mid September when all took part at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational; however, the Sheehys are coming into the ITAs as the No. 16 seeded duo based on their success during the ITA Summer Circuit. Their second-round opponent will be the winner between UTA's Pablo Colvee Debrot / Sansidh Kommaraiu and UTSA's Igor Cantanhede / Takeru Watanabe.
Additional double pairings for the Wildcats include junior
Brad Gleason / sophomore
Sebastian Langdon, freshman
Jackson Fine / sophomore
Cole Lawson, and Domanski / junior
Hunter Holman.
None of ACU's 10 singles players are seeded, but three (Adams, Agritelley,
Jonathan Sheehy) have been given a first-round bye.
