Men's and women's tennis splits twinbill with Xavier
3/4/2015 4:34:00 PM | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
DALLAS - Abilene Christian women's tennis avenged last season's loss to Xavier with a 4-3 victory Wednesday, but the men's squad dropped a 5-2 decision to the Musketeers as the two sides settled for a dual-match split on the indoor courts of the LifeTime Fitness Center.
The matches originally were to be played outdoors at the T Bar M Racquet Club as part of a doubleheader with Colin County, but those plans were nixed early this morning when temperatures in the Metroplex dropped into the low 30's. ACU's duals vs. Colin County were canceled.
The Wildcat women (4-0) lost in Cincinnati to the Musketeers last winter, 5-2, but today they won the doubles point behind victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions and later clinched the decision with triumphs at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles.
Junior Kaysie Hermsdorf and senior Brittney Reed continued their early-season roll in doubles, improving to 9-0 after doubling up the duo of Sydney Liggins and Amina Ismail 6-3. Also victorious was the No. 3 tandem of Lucile Pothier and Nada Marjanovic, who defeated Daniella Patton and Lauren Ghidotti, 6-2, in their season debut together.
Marjanovic and Hermsdorf extended their unbeaten streaks in singles as well. Hermsdorf knocked off Alex Brinker at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4, to move to 6-0 on the spring, while Marjanovic raised her season mark to 3-0 after beating Ghidotti at No. 5, 6-2, 6-4.
Sophomore Erin Walker evened her season record at 3-3, beating Ismail at the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-2.
On the men's side, the Wildcats (3-9) received two wins from freshman Henry Adams plus a three-set victory at No. 2 from Nico Agritelley.
Adams started with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles (with Jason Proctor) over Connor LaFavre and Michael Moe. He then edged Gabriel Chaves Araujo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.
Agritelley was playing his first match this spring at No. 2 and responded to the challenge with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Xavier's Jeremy Schneider. Agritelley owns the Wildcats' best singles record at 7-5. He is 1-0 at the No. 2 and 4 spots and 5-5 at No. 3.
The Wildcats are scheduled to return to action Friday at 11:44 a.m. with a home doubleheader against their longtime Southland Conference rivals from Incarnate Word. The duals will likely be played indoors shortly after the conclusion of praise chapel.
Friday's forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 50 degrees.
