Men's tennis edges Incarnate Word on late wins at No. 5 and 6

ABILENE - A sweep of doubles and late-match victories at No. 5 and 6 singles helped carry the Abilene Christian men's tennis team to a hard-fought 4-3 victory over its old Southland Conference rivals from Incarnate Word Friday afternoon on the indoor courts of the Teague Events Center.
The win lifted ACU's season and league records to 4-9 and 1-1, while the Cardinals fell to 5-9 and 0-1.
Incarnate Word trailed twice in the early goings. First after being swept in doubles by scores of 8-5, 8-5 and 8-1, and again after sophomore Nico Agritelley triumphed over Joey Vatanadilok, 6-3, 6-4 for his team-leading eighth win of the spring.
But the Cardinals would strike back with back-to-back wins at No. 3 and 4 to give them their first lead of the dual at 3-2. Tucker Brown held off Jason Proctor at the third position, 7-6 (6), 6-3, and at No. 4, Ryan Hoverson rallied from a set down to upset Henry Adams, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
At the 5 and 6 positions, however, Incarnate Word couldn't come close to clinching the team victory as Wildcat junior Marco Bensley routed Brody Rodriguez and freshman Paul Domanski came within a point of blanking Andre Buchanan-Dempsey, 6-0, 6-1.
The Wildcats continue their homestand Saturday with a 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader vs. Liberty and Texas-Pan American. Both matches are scheduled to be played on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
