BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman Kimone Green scored 28 points through four events and Daniel Block and Rosen Daniel won the first individual Southland Conference titles for the Abilene Christian men's program since 1971 during an exciting Tuesday of competition at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
A native of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Green won the 400-meter dash, placed second in the 200m, and scored four points in the 60m hurdles all before running the lead leg for a 4x400 relay that placed third in 3:45.65. She was followed by freshman Petrene Plummer, sophomore Taylor Yantis and junior Jessica James.
The six points earned by the Wildcats' relay capped an emotional afternoon for the coaching staff and many of the returning student-athletes as it was only one year ago here that ACU's women's team finished ninth with 25 points. This year's edition, however, had that score beat after nine events when Diana Garcia-Munoz, Isabella Gutierrez and Alexandria Hackett combined for seven points in the mile.
Green soon afterward earned 10 points for winning the 400m over Sam Houston State's Jordan Grady, 55.24 to 55.50, to vault the Wildcats into fourth place. And that's where ACU would stay for the remainder of the meet, coming in behind Stephen F. Austin (132.5), Sam Houston State (118) and Lamar (106) with 69 points.
Northwestern State was a distant fifth with 46 points.
"The women went from ninth to fourth in just one year because of the hard work put in by these amazingly talented and intelligent student-athletes," said head coach Keith Barnier. "They all want to be great, and as for Kimone, she stayed on that track for two-straight days sacrificing her body for the team."
All of Green's individual marks were personal bests. She completed the 60m hurdles in 8.72, which ranks her second on ACU's all-time top-performer list behind senior Lexus Williams, who today finished fourth in this event (8.67).
And despite there being only an hour separating the starts of the 400m and 200m dashes, Green was back on the track to win the first heat in 24.39. Unfortunately, SFA's Chasity Clark was a bit faster in winning the second heat (24.29).
The ACU women continued to pile up points in the distances and middle-distances as Plummer earned bronze in the 800m with a PR of 2:14.94, while in the 3K, Hackett and Garcia-Munoz prevented a Lamar sweep of the top-four places with their fourth and sixth-place times of 9:51.52 and 10:00.40.
In the field events, sophomore Kenzie Walker earned the Wildcats' lone points thanks to her fourth-place pole vault height of 12 feet-02.75 inches (3.73m).
Walker missed scoring here a year ago by two places, but was one of several Wildcat returners to move up in the standings of their respective events. Williams went from eighth to fourth in the 60m hurdles, while junior Jelani Rainey went from seventh to fourth in the weight throw (56-03.25 / 17.15m). Junior sprinter Johnathan Farquharson also moved up two spots from seventh to fifth in the 200m (21.56).
These subtle improvements, though, when combined with the efforts of the newcomers resulted in a substantial +44 point swing for the women and +24 for the men, who placed sixth here last February with 46 points.
The two-dozen extra points resulted in the men moving up one place in the standings, tying Northwestern State for fifth place with 70 points. However, they were only five points behind third-place Lamar and three points behind the defending champions from Southeastern Louisiana. Stephen F. Austin claimed the men's title by 13 points over Sam Houston State, 117-104.
Creating the biggest impact on the men's score today were individual champions Block and Daniel.
Block won the 800m with a PR of 1:50.01 that ranks him as the No. 7 all-time performer at ACU. He was the runner-up in this race a year ago, but this time it was no-contest as the senior from Dalmeny, Saskatchewan, beat the eight-man field by close to two seconds.
Daniel came into today as the No. 1 seed in the 400m and 200m, but had to settle for bronze in the 400m (47.01) as he was beat to the finish line by SFA's Cass Brown-Stewart and Sam Houston's Rodney Jones. Brown-Stewart set a meet and facility record with his winning mark of 46.49, while Jones crossed second in 46.97.
A couple races later, Daniel held onto the No. 1 spot in the 200m behind a first-place time of 21.32 that was .04 seconds faster than that of New Orleans' Constant Pretorius. He then concluded the Wildcats' championship stay, running the second leg for a third-place 1600m relay that completed its course in 3:12.51
Joining Daniel on the relay were Devan Brown, Osei Allyene-Forte and Deandre McBride.
SFA won the final event with a meet record of 3:10.86, and Central Arkansas was second (3:12.35).
Farquharson also scored in the 60m dash with his fifth-place time of 6.89, while in the heptathlon junior Luke Woods and freshman Wyatt French combined for seven team points. Woods was fifth overall, scoring 4,879 points, and French was seventh with 4,689 points.
Both Wildcats set a PR in pole vault as they tied for fourth with a leap of 13-07.25 (4.15m).
"Daniel and Rosen led by example all weekend, and Kai (Schmidt) truly made a reputation for himself as a freshman - in that he does his best when it means the most," said Barnier, "and to me, all of that is part of the ACU mystique. We are building a well-rounded program to score points in all the disciplines, and that's exactly what our student-athletes accomplished."
The Wildcats conclude their indoor season Friday, Feb. 20 at the Texas Tech Open and will have one full month off from competition before the outdoor season begins the weekend of March 19 at the TCU Invitational.
