COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Redshirt junior Corneil Lionel did not disappoint in his long-awaited debut for the Abilene Christian track and field team as his times in the 60 and 200-meter dashes Saturday at Texas A&M's Reveille Invitational moved him into the program's all-time top-10 performer list.
As the only Wildcat competing here this weekend, Lionel finished ninth (fifth among collegiate athletes) in the 60m against runners from TCU, Houston and Texas A&M with a mark of 6.86 seconds, which puts him ahead of Paris Robertson for seventh place on ACU's all-time performers' list. He then placed fourth (third among collegians) in the 200m with a time of 21.42, which ranks fifth all-time at ACU.
"Corneil can run with anyone in the country," said head coach Keith Barnier. "He sat out last season and we wanted to run him this weekend just to gain some valuable experience, and he ran two great races against Houston, TCU and A&M."
Lionel is a native of St. Lucia who was a four-time NJCAA All-America at Iowa Western from 2012-14 before transferring to ACU. His indoor personal bests include a 6.76 in 60m and 21.29 in the 200m.
The Wildcats return to Texas A&M January 16 for the Texas A&M Team Invitational. ACU's oppostion there will include Baylor, BYU, Oklahoma St., South Carolina, SFA, Texas, TCU, Texas State and UTSA.
