Wildcats handle Mountaineers, 69-46
12/12/2015 3:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
ABILENE – The ACU Wildcats led from start to finish Saturday afternoon as they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-46 win over Schreiner in a non-conference men's basketball game at Moody Coliseum.
The win pushes the Wildcats to 4-5 on the season, while the Mountaineers fall to 2-5 on their season. ACU will be back in action next Friday (Dec. 18) at 7 p.m. when it hosts California-Riverside at Moody Coliseum.
ACU freshman point guard Jaylen Franklin led all scorers with 14 points to go along with seven assists, six rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes. Senior guard Parker Wentz was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field, all of it from 3-point range.
Saturday's game was never in doubt as the Wildcats quickly jumped out to a 14-4 lead behind five early points from Jovan Crnic. Schreiner would never again be as close as that 10-point deficit over the final 33:17 of the game.
ACU's largest lead of the first half came with two seconds left in the opening 20 minutes when Austin Cooke buried a pair of free throws to give the Wildcats a 19-point lead at halftime (37-18). Cooke hit a layup on an inbounds pass from Jaylen Franklin with just 47 seconds gone in the second half to give the Wildcats their first 20-point lead of the game at 39-18.
The Wildcats' first 30-point lead came with 11:56 left in the game on a pair of free throws by Jaren Lewis, pushing the lead to 57-26. ACU cruised home from there to pick up the win over the Mountaineers.
