Ryan Beatty capped his three rounds at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic with a ninth-place finish at the tournament played at the Golfcrest Country Club.
Beatty fired rounds of 73-70 during Monday's first day of play at the par-72, 7,254-yard layout, and then followed it up Tuesday with a 3-over-par 75. Beatty finished the tournament tied for ninth at 2-over-par 218, seven strokes behind individual champion Matt Dunn of Houston, who fired rounds of 72-68-71 to finish at 211. He finished tied with Robert McIntyre (70-68-73) of McNeese State. Dunn won the individual title on the second playoff hole.
"
Ryan Beatty played very solid this week," ACU head coach
Tom Shaw said. "It was a ball-strikers course, which suits his game. The ability to hit high quality golf shots is Ryan's strength. If he could have putted a little better, we'd be talking about a victory right now. He is very close to pulling that off. Ryan has been a huge asset for the Wildcat golf team this fall. He gives us a chance to have a great team round every time we tee it up."
Houston won the team championship at 6-over-par 870 after posting rounds of 298-295-277, two shots ahead of runner-up North Texas, which finished at 8-over-par 872 (289-287-296). Three of ACU's Southland Conference rivals – McNeese State, Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist – finished eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively, in the team standings.
The University of Denver (13th at 920) and Southern Mississippi (14th at 928) finished in the final two spots in the team standings.
The ACU Wildcats finished 12th in the team standings at 49-over-par 913 with rounds of 37-301-305. Following Beatty in the standings for ACU were
Dillon Vaughn (tied for 60th at 231),
Robert Johnson (tied for 63rd at 233),
Garrett Glanton (tied for 68th at 236), and
Luke Carpenter (tied for 74th at 241).
"Goldcrest was a very challenging golf course on extremely fast Bermuda grass greens, the type of putting surfaces we haven't seen yet this year," Shaw said. "It was a good learning experience for us and we'll take advantage of this moving forward."
The Wildcats will wrap up their fall schedule Oct. 25-27 at The Grove Intercollegiate at The Grove Golf Club in College Grove, Tenn.
