ABILENE – The Abilene Christian and Texas Tech volleyball teams conclude their home-and-home series Tuesday when the Wildcats welcome their West Texas rivals to Moody Coliseum for a 6 p.m. match.
Video of Tuesday's match will be broadcast live via Stretch Internet for the single-game price of $7.95. Fans can also purchase an all-access pass to watch all of ACU's live sporting events for $99.95 or an Olympic Sports pass (which includes a combined 20 volleyball, softball and baseball broadcasts) for $39.95.
Calling the match will be former head ACU volleyball coach Brek Horn and the 'Voice of the Wildcats' Grant Boone.
The Red Raiders won last week's meeting in three sets, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-19, but then lost three of four on the road at Washington State in falling to 5-4 on the season. ACU, meanwhile, comes into the match – which ACU head coach Kellen Mock considers the Wildcats' biggest home event of the season – at 2-2.
"It's nice to have a good, high-level opponent for us on a big opening night at Moody," said Mock. "We took last week off to rest, focus and prepare for this match while they played four teams before turning around and coming to play us. I think that could prove to be a big factor … hopefully we play a solid match against them once again and can take it to the next level on the pins and get a few more kills."
Texas Tech trailed just once during last week's match and often collected just one big string of five-to-six points per game in order to establish control over the Wildcats. ACU, on the other hand, was unable to develop that level of offensive consistency and didn't extend a consecutive points streak past two until early in the third set. As a result, the team hit just .080 for the match on 33 kills and recorded a season low with 4.5 blocks.
"I tell my girls that there's a big difference between losing a match and getting beat – and we got outplayed by a good opponent," said Mock. "However, I don't think the score quite reflected how good we played overall. I thought we kept up with them and played a good match."
"I think we'll have an upper hand Tuesday," added senior and two-year team captain Madelyn Robinett. "We'll be playing at home and feel much more comfortable here … Last week the biggest difference was they'd get three or four straight points and we'd get two, so it was a constant battle for us the whole time even though they never pulled that far away from us."
Even though the Wildcats didn't play last weekend, they continue to lead the Southland Conference in blocks with 2.5 per set and opponent hitting percentage at .109. Tech finished its match with ACU hitting .256 as a team, which was its second-highest average so far this season.
Individually, freshman Lexi Mercier ranks third in the Southland Conference with a .367 hitting percentage and first in blocks with 1.69 per set, while sophomore Jennie Loerch is eighth in blocks (0.93) and 10th in kills (2.93).
Also ranked among the league's top-10 leaders are sophomore Sarah Siemens, who is ninth in assists (7.75), and sophomore Madison Hoover, who is sixth in digs (4.12).
Red Raiders to watch Tuesday night include attackers Breeann David (104k, .308, 14 aces, 24 blocks), Aubree Piper (91k, .286, 21 blocks) and Mikia Mills (69k, .252, 24 blocks), plus setter Emily Ruetter (11.25 assists per set) and libero Rachel Brummitt (5.19 digs per set).
