FORT WORTH, Texas – The Lone Star Conference Tuesday named Abilene Christian's Grant Boone as its 2013 recipient of the Jake Trussell Award during the league's annual football media day. The Trussell Award is presented to the league's broadcaster of the year.
A 1991 graduate of ACU's Journalism/Mass Communication Department, Boone recently completed his fifth season as the "Voice of the Wildcats." He is the fourth ACU Broadcaster to win the Trussell Award, joining Dave Martin of KNIT (1973), Bill Bourland of KTAB (1980) and David Bacon of KSLI (2004).
Assistant commissioner Melanie Robotham notified Boone of his honor two weeks ago and invited him to today's award presentation in which Nick Gholson of the Wichita Falls Times Record News accepted his third Kirk Hill Award. The Hill Award is presented to the league's sportswriter of the year.
Boone, who also serves ACU as an Alumni Relations Officer was unable to accept the Trussel award in person, but following the league's official announcement, he posted on Facebook, "This was unexpected and delightful news. Hopefully, it honors God first and then ACU. I'm grateful to have not only broadcast sporting events nationally and for my alma mater but also to have known what I wanted to be as far back as I can remember."
"Grant has carried the banner of the Lone Star Conference and its best teams and student-athletes to all corners of the sports world as a freelance play-by-play man for CBS College Sports Network, CBS Sports golf coverage and others," the Lone Star Conference noted in its official release, adding, "during most of his national broadcasts, he'll mention ACU or mention another LSC school if a player from one of the league schools is either on the field or course."
For the better part of two decades Boone has worked tirelessly in TV, radio, internet and print as a broadcaster and writer for a variety of media outlets, including CBS Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports, TNT, Golf Channel, CBS Radio Sports and PGA.com.
Boone broadcasted from Amen Corner for Masters.com last spring, and this weekend he will be providing coverage for the World Golf Championships (Aug. 1-4) in Akron, Ohio followed by the PGA Championships (Aug. 5-11) in Rochester, N.Y.
Boone split his time broadcasting football games for both ACU and the United States Naval Academy during the 2012 season, while hosting the ACU Coaches Show on Monday nights and the Ken Collums Show, which was recorded Thursday afternoons.
He then transitioned into calling a full slate of ACU men's and women's basketball games, and in the spring he called a select number of Wildcat baseball and softball contests. This summer Boone brought together a number of ACU coaches, administrators and former student-athletes to take part in a successful three-day, five-city Wildcat Caravan, which helped build excitement for ACU's move into the Southland Conference and NCAA Division I athletics.
ACU departed the Lone Star Conference at the start of the month, bringing and end to its 40-year relationship with the league and more than 30 years as an NCAA Division II member.
