Wildcat Tennis Wins Two Big Matches at UIW Before Start of Vegas Trip

SAN ANTONIO - The Abilene Christian men's and women's tennis teams swept its doubleheader against Incarnate Word Sunday at the Mabry Tennis Center. The third-ranked women posted their third straight shutout of the weekend and ninth of the season in winning, 9-0, while the 14th-ranked men came through with a hard-fought 7-2 triumph.

The road ahead, however, will get much more difficult for the Wildcats as they leave tonight for a week-long trip to Las Vegas, where they'll face nationally ranked Fresno Pacific, Hawaii Pacific and the defending national champions from Armstrong Atlantic. The Pirates men's and women's teams are ranked first in the country.

ACU's women's team (11-3, 2-0 LSC) continued to use some new combinations in sweeping its doubles competition. Sophomore Brittney Reed and senior Laura Mongin won together for the first time this season after topping the No. 2 team of Nicole Karaklis and Malisa Vatanadilok, 8-1. Julia Mongin and Micah Hermsdorf won their match at No. 1 over Ivana Katavic and Andi Botha, 8-5, and at No. 3, Kaysie Hermsdorf and Nada Marjanovic doubled up Taryn Strahl and Jennifer Betancourt, 8-4.

In singles, Laura Mongin won her second straight match this weekend at No. 3 to push her winning streak to 10, but it took some effort as she was forced to defeat Karaklis in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 10-7. Meanwhile, her twin sister, Julia, was the first one off the court after recording a 6-0, 6-0 win vs. Katavic. The remaining four Wildcats also won in straight sets, lifting the team's overall singles record to 65-16 (.802).

ACU's men's team (10-6, 1-0 LSC) entered singles with a big 3-0 lead following its doubles sweep. The Wildcats' No. 1 and 3 teams each won 8-5, and then the No. 2 duo of sophomore Borja Cortes and freshman Jason Proctor edged Leonard Ivic and Aiden DeLeon, 9-8, to improve to 3-1 on the season. ACU's No. 3 freshmen team of Nicklas Wingord and Marco Bensley remain undefeated at 4-0, and senior Hans Hach - who teamed with sophomore Guilherme Gesser at No. 1 - lifted his doubles mark to 12-3 with four different partners.

Hach and Gesser, playing at 1 and 2 singles, each won in straight sets, as did Cortes, who today played for the first time at No. 5 as he continues to recover from injury.

Bensley had a nice comeback at No. 6, beating Luke Trautmann 0-6, 6-1, 10-6.
