TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior pitcher Caitlyn Crain delivered her first complete-game shutout of the season followed by her first save, leading the Wildcats to a pair of wins Saturday over Regis and New Haven at the NFCA D-II Leadoff Classic.
ACU beat the Rangers, 6-0, and the Chargers, 11-7, in improving to 7-5 on the season.
Crain (4-1) struck out four batters during the Wildcats' early-morning game vs. Regis (0-8) and twice left the bases loaded in the third and fifth innings.
The Rangers put three aboard with one out in the third, but Crain rallied with a strikeout of No. 3 batter Breanna Backlund and then got Taylor Wilcox to pop out to first baseman Courtney Flanary.
Regis again loaded the bases with one out in the fifth only to have Wilcox foul out and designated player Nicole Hull ground out to third to end the threat.
Offensively, ACU broke the game open with a four-run fourth against starter Sydney Gaffin (0-3). Lyndi Smith drove in the first two runs with a double to right, Heather Peacock then followed with a RBI single and later scored on Taylor Fitzgerald's base hit to left.
Fitzgerald plated Peacock a second time in the sixth to make it a 5-0 game, and Keanna Winkfield scored the game's final run on a passed ball in the seventh.
Peacock and Fitzgerald both finished the first game 2 for 3.
Peyton Mosley (1-2) started vs. the Chargers and pitched long enough to earn her first win of the season despite surrendering five runs - four earned - on 10 hits through 4.0 innings. The junior, however, struck out a season-high seven and walked only one batter, while stranding 10 base runners.
New Haven scored single runs in the first and second to take leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Wildcats came back each time to tie before exploding for seven runs in the third that put them up, 9-2.
The Chargers eventually chased Mosley from the game following a three-run fourth - which made it a 9-5 game - but the Wildcats would counter with two runs in the sixth.
Crain kept New Haven off the scoreboard until the seventh, where they plated two runs on a couple of hits in finishing the game with 13.
ACU ripped eight hits by comparison, but benefitted in a big way from eight New Haven errors that led to as many unearned runs.
Wildcats' No. 2-5 hitters Sara Vaughn, Madison Buckley, Flanary and Smith all scored two runs. Smith also had two RBI along with Peacock.
ACU will conclude its stay in Arizona Sunday with a third-straight doubleheader; however, their opponents and start times have yet to be determined.
