Wildcats pick up pair of wins

SAN ANTONIO – The ACU Wildcats wrapped up their opening weekend of play on Saturday by sweeping a pair of matches from East Central and Pace University at the St. Mary's Classic at Bill Greehey Arena.

The two wins push the Wildcats to 3-1 on the season as they prepare for the start of Lone Star Conference play. ACU will open league play on Tuesday when it goes to Kingsville to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m.

ACU opened Saturday's play with a 15-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-21 win over former LSC rival East Central (Okla.), and then took a 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 win over Pace, which finished the tournament 0-4.

ACU head coach Kellen Mock went back to a 5-1 offensive set with sophomore Caley Johnson running the offense from the setter position, and it paid off as the Wildcats hit a combined .245 in the two matches and sophomore Caley Johnson came up with 81 assists in the two matches.

In the opening win over East Central, senior Jennie Hutt had 14 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Neely Borger had 10 kills, two service aces, two digs and eight blocks. After dropping the first game, the Wildcats had little trouble with the Tigers, winning the final three games to take the victory.

In ACU's win over Pace, Hutt finished with 14 kills and 12 digs, while Kalynne Allen and Sara Oxford each had 10 kills. ACU hit .244 in the match to just .112 for Pace.
