Wildcats drop two at Angelo


SAN ANGELO – The 25th-ranked ACU Wildcats dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the Angelo State Invitational, losing to both Edinboro (Pa.) and Texas-Permian Basin at the Junell Center.

The two losses run ACU's losing streak to three matches as the Wildcats fall to 5-4.  The Wildcats will be back in action Tuesday when they  host Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. in a Lone Star Conference match and the Wildcats' home-opener at Moody Coliseum.

The Wildcats dropped a 3-0 decision to Edinboro to start the day, falling 25-23, 25-19, 26-24, and then lost a 2-1 edge against Texas-Permian Basin in a 3-2 loss (21-25, 25-18, 32-34, 26-14, 15-6).

ACU hit a combined .202 in the match against Edinboro, while Edinboro hit a combined .295 in a dominating win over the Wildcats.  Jennie Hutt had 11 kills and Caley Johnson 28 assists for ACU, but those were the only highlights of the match for the Wildcats.

In the tournament finale against Permian Basin, the Wildcats led 2-1 in sets and had a 22-21 lead in the fourth set  after a kill by Hutt gave ACU a one point edge.  But a service error on Hutton and a service ace by Melissa Lusk gave the Lady Falcons a 23-22 lead.

ACU, though, battled back to tie the score at 24-24 on back-to-back kills by Madelyn Robinett and Sara Oxford.  But the Lady Falcons scored the final two points of the set to knot the match at two sets apiece.

Permian Basin dominated the fifth set, breaking out to a 9-3 lead and never looking back.  ACU crept to within 11-6, but the Lady Falcons scored the final four points of the match to take the victory.

ACU shot itself in the foot time and again with 37 attack errors (.127 attack percentage), seven service errors and five ball-handling errors.  Oxford had 20 kills, while Hutt had 14 and 16 digs.  Rachel Riley chipped inw ith 11 kills, six digs and two blocks.
