SAN ANTONIO – The No. 1 ACU Wildcats performed like the country's top-ranked men's golf team on Tuesday, pulling away from the field to win team championship at the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational golf tournament.
Also, junior all-America Alex Carpenter – the reigning NCAA Division II Player of the Year – won the individual championship, his third tournament win in four fall tournaments and 14th win of his remarkable career.
The Wildcats were tied with Incarnate Word at 293 after Monday's first round, but ACU posted rounds of 4-under-par 284 and 9-over-par 297 Tuesday to pull away for the win, finishing the 54-hole tournament at 10-over-par 874 and five strokes in front of Northeastern State (879).
Incarnate Word was third at 887, followed by Newman (Kan.) at 907 and Arkansas-Fort Smith at 910.
Carpenter had a four-stroke lead in the individual standings after Monday's first round when he shot a 6-under-par 66 at the par-72, 6,908-yard Dominion Country Club. Carpenter followed that with rounds of 70-73 on Tuesday to finish at 1-under-par 209, one stroke ahead of Northeastern State's Casey Nelson (72-68-70–210).
The win for Carpenter was the 14h of his career, third of this fall and second straight this fall. For his team, since Carpenter joined the ACU program in September 2009, the Wildcats now have 23 straight top-seven team finishes and 14 straight top-three finishes.
The Wildcats will close out the fall season next Monday and Tuesday at the Marjorie Whitney Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
