ABILENE – The No. 1-ranked ACU Wldcats blew away the field Tuesday at the Tascosa Golf Club, shooting a 1-over-par 289 in cold, blustery conditions to win the Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational by 18 strokes.
Junior Alex Carpenter – the reigning NCAA Division II Player of the Year – fired a 4-under-par 67 on Tuesday to finish at 2-under-par 208 en route to winning the individual championship. For Carpenter it was the 13th individual title of his ACU career in 27 starts.
Carpenter's finish – combined with three other players in the top 13 – helped ACU win and finish in the top three in its 13th straight tournament.
The hosts from West Texas A&M finished second at 877, while Cameron was third at 878, Lubbock Christian fourth at 881 and Wayland Baptist fifth at 885.
Following Carpenter for the Wildcats was freshman Corbin Renner, who held the individual lead going into Tuesday's final round. However, he shot a 76 to finish at 215 and solidly in fifth place.
Kyle Dickerson shot a 74 on Tuesday to finish seventh at 219, while Trey Sullivan shot a 77 on Tuesday to finish at 222 and tied for 13th. Freshman Luke Carpenter rebounded from an opening-round 80 on Monday to shoot rounds of 71 and 72, but his score of 223 didn't count towards the top four scores, although he finished tied for 15th.
The Wildcats are off until Oct. 24-25 when they play in the Bruce Williams Memorial in San Antonio.
