ACU men set for ITA regional

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The ACU?men's tennis team will be in America's Heartland this weekend as they play in the USTA / ITA South Central Region championship tournament at the Frank Grube Tennis Courts on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University.
The tournament will begin Friday and will conclude Sunday with championship matches in both singles and doubles. The regional singles and doubles champions will advanced to play in the ITA Small College Championships, which will be Oct. 14-17 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
The Wildcats' entries in singles competition will be redshirt freshman Hans Hoch, junior Eldad Campbell, sophomore Alfredo Desiati, senior Bryan Joiner, junior John Strahl and Jake Hendrie.
The Wildcats' doubles teams will be Hoch-Joiner, Nick Plum-Hendrie and Campbell-Strahl.
“I'd love to see Bryan have a great tournament in both singles and doubles,” ACU?head coach Hutton Jones said. “He and Luke Hawk finished last year ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 14 in the nation, and I think he and Hans have a chance to be a really good doubles team this year. They've got to get comfortable with each other on the court, but I think they've got what it takes to win the doubles title.”
On the singles side, Hoch will have to shake off a year's worth of rust that built up while he was serving a redshirt season in 2009-10, but Jones believes his redshirt freshman from Cuiacan, Mexico, has what it takes to be a dominant No. 1 player.
“He's going to need some time to get himself back into playing shape for these types of tournaments,” Jones said. “But we've got 4-5 guys, including Hans, who could win the singles championship. That kind of depth is why I believe our men's team is as good as it's ever been going into the season.”
