ITA Regional Draw
ABILENE – Rain and the women from Abilene Christian University and Cameron University were the big stories Friday on the first day of the ITA South Central Region championships on the ACU campus.
The day began under cloudy skies and ended in a steady rain, forcing the tournament to be moved indoors to indoor facilities at ACU and Fairway Oaks Country Club. That forced a delay in the completion of singles and pushed the completion of the day's doubles play late into Friday night.
Tournament organizers, however, said singles and doubles play would be in line for Saturday's bracket, even with a late night finish to doubles on Friday.
The day's other big story was the play of both the ACU and Cameron women as they dominated play in singles. ACU will have five women playing Saturday morning in the Round of 16, while Cameron will have four players left in the winner's bracket.
The other seven spots belong to players from Central Oklahoma (two players), St. Edward's, Northwest Missouri State, Tarleton State, Southwest Baptist and Newman (one player apiece).
The tournament's No. 1 seed, ACU senior
Jaclyn Walker, cruised into the Round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Central Oklahoma's Ross Cabato in the first round and a 6-2, 6-0 Round of 32 win over Northeastern State's Agata Skorupska.
Walker will play Tarleton State's Alicia Perez at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Round of 16 with the winner advancing to Saturday afternoon's quarterfinal match.
ACU's other players through to the Round of 16 are sophomores
Hannah Kelley and No. 2 seed
Julia Mongin and freshmen
Emily Conrad and
Micah Hermsdorf.
Cameron's top-seeded player is No. 3 seed Amanda Moberg, and she, too, cruised into the Round of 16 with a 6-0, 6-4 first-round win over Northeastern State's Ivana Belejova and a 6-1, 6-2 win over Briando Navarro of Incarnate Word in the Round of 32.
Cameron's other players into the Round of 16 are No. 7 seed Julia Puckhaber, Sara Londono and Elle Sholles.
