ACU, Rams set to renew rivalry

ABILENE – The No. 3-ranked ACU Wildcats will renew a long-standing rivalry Saturday against Angelo State when they meet in a Lone Star Conference South Division game at Shotwell Stadium. The game is the first Big Country-Concho Valley Shootout Presented by State Farm.

Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Local fans can listen to the game on the radio on Mix 92.5 FM. Fans can watch a replay of the game Sunday at 2 p.m. on This TV (cable channel 40; channel 126 on Suddenlink HD).

Last week the Wildcats knocked off Eastern New Mexico, 53-14, to run their record to 8-0 overall, 7-0 in the LSC and 4-0 in the LSC South Division. Angelo State, meanwhile, snapped a four-game losing streak with a 61-17 win over Incarnate Word as the Rams improved to 3-4 overall, 3-4 in the LSC and 1-4 in the LSC South.

ACU: Sophomore quarterback Mitchell Gale threw five touchdown passes for the second straight week and the third time this season as the Eagles hammered Eastern New Mexico, 53-14, in Blackwater Draw, N.M. The Wildcats cruised to a 27-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back as they cruised to their eighth straight win. Senior wide receiver Edmund Gates caught seven passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns, his fourth straight 100-yard game of the season, fifth of the season and 10th of his career. The Wildcats posted 575 yards of total offense and held the Greyhounds to just 267 yards, more than 180 yards below their per-game average entering the game.
Angelo State: Josh Neiswander threw for a season-high 385 yards and hit four different receivers for scores as Angelo State snapped a four-game losing skid and collected the second-highest point total in school history in a 61-17 win over Incarnate Word. Neiswander completed 24 of 34 passes to move within two completions of tying ASU's career completions mark, but was lifted in the fourth quarter with the Rams ahead. The 61 points scored were second only to the 69 points scored by ASU against Fort Lewis (Colo.) in 1993. Angelo State scored three times in the first quarter and built a commanding 45-10 lead by the half.
