CANYON – One of the nation's hottest teams will try to win its first conference title since 2005 this weekend when the ACU Wildcats begin play in the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament at The Box on the West Texas A&M campus.
The No. 2 seed Wildcats will open tournament play Thursday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on No. 7 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Wildcats whipped the Lady Javelinas, 3-0, on Nov. 5 in Abilene. A win over Kingsville would send ACU into Friday afternoon's tournament semifinals against either Texas Woman's or Angelo State.
The championship match is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, and sets up to be a rematch of last year's epic final between ACU and West Texas A&M, a match the Lady Buffs won 3-2, rallying from a fifth-set deficit to win the title.
The Wildcats making their league-leading 19th appearance in the Lone Star Conference Post-Season Tournament and embarking on their seventh straight trip to the tournament. The Wildcats are looking for their fourth trip to the tournament championship match where they recorded victories in 2004 and 2005.
Last season the Wildcats enterened the tournament riding a 10-match winning streak and beat Angelo State and Tarleton State to reach the final before falling 3-2 to West Texas A&M in an epic championship match. This year the Wildcats enter the tournament having won 15 straight matches, carrying a 27-5 record into the tournament. The 15 wins ties the school's second longest winning streak only behind the 31-match winning streak in 2005 while their 27 wins are the eighth best single season total in school history as is the .844 winning percentage.
Since opeing the season by going 1-3 at the Nebraska-Omaha Showcase, the Wildcats have won 26 of their last 28 matches with their only losses coming to nationally ranked opponents in then- No. 7 West Texas A&M (Sept. 17) and then-No. 5 Central Missouri (Oct. 2). In fact all of ACU's five losses have been to teams that either were nationally ranked at the time of the match, or have since entered the current top 25.
