Wildcats set to host tourney

ABILENE -- The ACU softball team opens the home portion of its season this weekend as it hosts the CBS Insurance Classic at Wells Field.

The Wildcats opened the 2008 season last weekend with a successful 4-1 run through the St. Mary's Tournament. ACU was led by transfer catcher Jessica Shiery (.500 batting average with one home run and five RBI) and senior pitcher Kim McDonald, who was named the Lone Star Conference South Division Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after she threw a perfect game last Saturday in a 12-0 win over Delta State.

ACU will open the tournament with a pair of games Thursday against Emporia State (4 p.m.) and St. Mary's (6 p.m.). The Lady Hornets of Emporia State finished as the NCAA Division II national runner-up two seasons ago and entered the season ranked No. 11 in the nation. The Lady Rattlers also went 4-1 last weekend in their tournament and were named the tournament champion because of a better run differential than ACU (plus-16 for St. Mary's to plus-12 for ACU) and they are ranked No. 9 in the nation.

The Wildcats will play Cameron at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by an 8 p.m. game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Wildcats will close their portion of the tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday against Northeastern State. The final game of the tournament will be Saturday at 7 p.m. when Southeastern Oklahoma State takes on Cameron.
