Competing for the placekicking job in 2009 after ACU lost four-year letterman Matt Adams following the 2008 season. Served a redshirt season at Oklahoma in 2007, but did not play in 2008.

High school: Covey was a two-year letterman who played at safety and running back and handled kickoff and punting duties. He recorded 120 tackles (61 solo tackles) his senior year to go along with four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, three fumbles caused, 11 pass breakups, and three touchdowns on offense.  Covey was all-district his junior year, and District 6-5A co-MVP and team MVP as well as Dallas Morning-News second team all-area his senior season. He was voted Outstanding Male Athlete as a senior at Coppell HS. Covey was also a four-year letterman and a two-time regional and state wrestling champion. He was a combined 84-0 over his final two seasons. Covey was recognized as all-area by the Morning-News after both his junior and senior seasons. He also lettered in soccer.
