Listed as the starter at right cornerback going into the 2006 season. If he plays there, it would be the third different position he will have played during his ACU career: running back, linebacker and cornerback 2005 (Junior): Rebounded nicely from a season-ending injury in the 2004 season. Gaines played in nine games and played both running back and linebacker for the Wildcats, and will make the permanent move to defense in 2006. Last year he carried the ball 15 times for 51 yards and caught one pass for 14 yards. Defensively he had 16 tackles (nine solo), one-half tackle for loss, one interception and one pass breakup. 2004 (Sophomore): Gaines was the Wildcats' starter through the early part of the season, and had the best game of his collegiate career on Sept. 11 when he rushed for 136 yards on 28 carries in a 23-14 win over Northeastern State. Scored his only touchdown of the season in a 28-21 loss at Eastern New Mexico on Sept. 25. Two weeks later against Angelo State, rushed for 18 yards on seven carries before his season ended when his right ankle was dislocated and his right fibula was broken. 2003 (Freshman): Played in four games as a true freshman, although he didn't play until midway through the season. He carried the ball 40 times for 178 yards and scored once. He had his best game of the season in ACU's 21-7 win at Texas A&M-Commerce (Nov. 1) when he rushed for 85 yards on 17 carries. In his first game at the collegiate level - Oct. 18 at Angelo State - he rushed for 71 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries. High school: As a senior at Waco HS, Gaines earned first team all-district honors after rushing for 1,054 yards and 10 touchdowns on 146 carries. Helped lead the Lions to a 10-0 regular season and a district championship. Waco lost to Klein Forest, 26-13, in the area round of the Class 5A playoffs.
