Listed as the backup to middle linebacker Cody Stutts in his first season at ACU after transferring from Angelo State.
2005 (Angelo State): Starnes was a contributor as a freshman on Angelo State's NCAA Division II playoff team. In eight games, he finished with 32 tackles (10 solo), four tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. In Angelo State's come-from-behind 27-24 win over ACU on Oct. 8, Starnes had three tackles (one solo) and one-half tackle for loss. The Rams finished 9-3 on the season.
High school: Starnes was a teammate of current ACU basketball player Cam Holson and current Texas quarterback Colt McCoy at Jim Ned HS as the three helped the Indians reach the Class 2A state championship game in 2003. As a senior in 2004, Starnes had 103 tackles, six sacks, three forced fumbled, five fumble recoveries and 20 quarterback hurries. An honorable mention all-state player as a junior in 2003, Starnes was a first team all-state selection by the Associated Press and third team all-state selection by the Texas Sports Writers Association as a senior in 2004. In three seasons as a starter, Starnes helped the Indians to a combined 34-4 record.
