High school: Two-year letterman for coach Wayne Hutchinson. Passed for 1,088 yards and 7 touchdowns in 5 games as junior in 2008. Passed for 2,036 yards and 23 touchdowns (144 of 243) as senior in 2009 with 284 yards rushing and 8 TDs. Honors include second team all-district QB as junior and senior, first team all-district kicker and punter as senior. Named first team all-Big Country by Abilene Reporter-News, honorable mention all-state by Texas Sports Writers Association and first team academic all-state. Also competed in basketball (all-district and co-MVP), baseball (all-district and third team all-state OF), golf (second in medalist standings) and tennis. Class valedictorian. Played in the state baseball and golf tournaments and in the 2010 FCA all-star game at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene after senior season. Also all-Big Country and all-region in basketball.
