Gonzalez, Ramirez Pick Up Weekly Honors From UAC

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Abilene Christian volleyball's Hannah Gonzalez was recognized as the United Athletic Conference Player of the Week, while Brennan Ramirez earned UAC Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. The duo powered the Wildcats to a pair of wins at Oral Roberts last week.
It's the second week in a row ACU has received a weekly conference accolade after Alyssa Todd was named the UAC Freshman of the Week. The Wildcats won six straight sets against the Golden Eagles between a 3-1 win on Friday and a Saturday sweep in Tulsa, Okla. ACU wrapped up its road trip at Oklahoma on Sunday.
Gonzalez totaled 38 kills and averaged a conference-leading 3.80 kills per set over the Wildcats' three matches. Her total kills were second in the UAC. The senior middle blocker also paced the conference with 46.5 points and 4.65 points per set. Gonzalez completed her well-rounded effort with 13 blocks and a conference-best 1.30 blocks per set.
Ramirez joined Gonzalez in setting the tone for a strong defensive effort by the Wildcats. The redshirt sophomore libero logged 50 digs and averaged an even five per set. Ramirez added six assists and four service aces, with at least one ace in each match. She was on the receiving end of 59 serves, committing just one error. Ramirez ranked second in the UAC last week in digs per set and tied for seventh in aces per frame.
Gonzalez began her dominant week with one of the top performances of her career at Oral Roberts on Friday. She amassed 21 kills with zero attack errors and a .750 hitting percentage. It's the highest attack percentage by a UAC player this season and tied for the most kills overall. It's the most kills in a four-set match. Gonzalez also chipped in three blocks.
Gonzalez followed with a career-best nine blocks in Saturday's 3-0 trouncing of Oral Roberts. The Lucas, Texas product had two solo rejections and teamed up for seven block assists. Gonzalez also led the offensive attack with 14 kills at a .480 clip and an ace. Her hitting percentage was the next highest in the UAC last week.
Gonzalez's nine rejections are the second-most in the conference this season and the most in just three sets. ACU limited Oral Roberts to a mere 18 kills in a dominant defensive effort. It's the fewest kills the Wildcats have allowed to an opponent since 2008. ACU swung at a season-best .299 hitting percentage with 43 kills to just 14 attack errors.
Gonzalez ranks in the UAC's top 10 for hitting percentage (.310), blocks (37) and points (112.5) this season. Last year, she was named First Team All-Western Athletic Conference.
Ramirez patrolled the Wildcats' defense and collected 24 digs in their first win over the Golden Eagles. She notched a couple of aces and assisted on three attacks. Ramirez's 24 digs were the most in a four-set UAC match last week. She followed with 18 digs, an ace and an assist in the next day's sweep.
The Waxahachie, Texas native leads the conference with 174 digs and is in the top 10 with 11 aces through nine matches.
Following a six-match road swing, ACU returns to Moody Coliseum this weekend for the Wildcat Classic. It hosts Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. Thursday to open the tournament, then meets Prairie View A&M at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats close it out versus Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. Saturday with PJs and Pancakes. It's also the team's Alumni Weekend, capped with its First Serve Dinner at 5 p.m. Saturday.
