Vollmer Paces Wildcats in Top 10 After Day 1 at West Texas Classic

ABILENE - Abilene Christian women's golf landed in third place through two rounds at the West Texas Classic at Abilene Country Club's North Course on Monday. Julia Vollmer tied for ninth place at 2-over 142 while competing as an individual, and fellow sophomore Marissa Loya was the Wildcats' top contributor in a draw for 14th.
ACU closes out its home tournament on Tuesday, with the third and final round beginning with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start.
Each of the Wildcats' seven golfers placed within the top 30 as they led the field with 28 birdies and collected the fourth-most pars with 107. ACU tallied the third-fewest bogeys.
Vollmer rose 19 spots from one round to the next, opening with a 4-over 74 before delivering the second-best score in the second round at 2-under 68. She collected four birdies in the second round and shot 4-under across her final 15 holes.
Loya paced the Wildcats' team scoring at 3-over 143 following a 1-under 69 in the first round. She scored 4-over 74 in the second. Loya led ACU and tied for sixth in the field with 25 pars while totaling four birdies.
Ryann Honea was right behind Loya in a tie for 16th place at 4-over 144. She tied for third in the field with seven birdies alongside Jasmine Do. Honea shot 1-over 71 in the opening round with three birdies and a 1-under 34 on the back nine. She carded a 3-over 73 in the second round.
Maddi Kamas tied for 21st place at 5-over 145. She rose seven spots after bouncing back from a 4-over 74 in the first round with a 1-over 71 in the second. Kamas, Vollmer and Loya each tied for the fewest bogeys among the Wildcats. Kamas had five birdies.
Do and Jiyu Han each followed in a tie for 25th at 6-over 146. Both logged rounds of 2-over 72 and 4-over 74. Han registered five birdies.
Kate Pickrell rounded things out for the Wildcats, rising 11 spots to 30th place at 8-over 178 while competing as an individual. She recorded five birdies between rounds of 5-over 75 and 3-over 73.
