Ryann Honea set a new ladies' course record at Hillcrest Country Club as Abilene Christian women's golf landed in first place through two rounds at Oral Roberts' The Lady Clerico. The Wildcats scored a 3-over 579 on Monday as Honea stands in first place on the individual leaderboard at 7-under 137.
ACU closes out the tournament on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start to the third and final round.Â
Honea carded a 5-under 67 in the opening round, matching both her career best and the program's lowest-scoring round, which she tied at last season's Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Jiyu Han shot 5-under 67 at the A-Ga-Ming Invitational in 2023.
ACU holds a one-shot lead over second-place Southern Miss and a nine-shot cushion over third-place Houston Christian. Honea is two shots in front of Northern Colorado's second-place Timbre Shehee. Shehee logged a 5-under 67 of her own in the second round.
Honea leads a trio of Wildcat golfers in the top 10, with
Kate Pickrell and
Julia Vollmer each tied for sixth place at even-par 144. Vollmer is competing as an individual.
Maddi Kamas joins the group in the top 15, tying for 15th place at 2-over 146.
ACU leads the 12-team field on par 5 holes at 7-under while ranking third on par 4s at 10-over. The Wildcats' 28 birdies are second-most while registering the second-least bogeys.
Honea totaled 10 birdies to lead the field with five in each round. She shot at par or below on each hole in the first round, including a 3-under on the back nine. Honea stayed hot in the second round, logging a 2-under 70 with birdies on No. 10 and No. 18 in both rounds. She tied for the top performances in the field on par 3s and par 5s, scoring 1-under and 5-under, respectively.
After firing a 1-over 73 in the first round, Pickrell rose eight spots with a 1-under 71 in the second. She capped her day with a birdie on No. 18 in the second round to close at even par. Along with Honea, Pickrell tied for fifth on par 4s at 1-under and is second in the tournament with 28 pars.
Vollmer made a sizable jump of her own in the rankings, rising 12 spots after producing a 2-under 70 in the second round. She shot a 2-under in the back nine of the first round to finish at 2-over 74, then fired six birdies in the second round, including three on her final four holes. Vollmer tied for second on par 4s at 2-under.
Kamas negated three bogeys with a trio of birdies to close at par in the first round. Her final birdie of the day came on hole No. 18 in the second round, securing a 2-over 74 effort.
Sophomores
Marissa Loya and
Jasmine Do wrapped up the day in ties for 31st and 39th place, respectively. Each showed a four-stroke improvement from the first round to the second, with Loya scoring an 8-over 152 in her first tournament of the season. Do recorded a 10-over 154.
