DALLAS - Abilene Christian entered Saturday's conference championship match as the underdog to No. 1 seed Grand Canyon.Â
That didn't matter to the No. 3 Wildcats. For the second match in-a-row, ACU won the doubles point on its way to a 4-2 victory over the Lopes in the 2025 WAC Team Tennis Championships at SMU's indoor Altec/Stylslinger Tennis Complex.
ACU receives an automatic spot in the NCAA Tournament with the win.
Daniel Morozov and
Merse Deli won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, and the duo of
Ethan Scribner and
Alejandro Verdasco came away with a 7-6 win on a 7-1 tiebreaker to give ACU a 1-0 lead in the team dual.
In singles, GCU opened with a straight-set win at the No. 5 line. Morozov followed with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles to push the Wildcats back in front, 2-1.
Once again the Lopes tied the match 2-all, leaving three singles matches to decide the conference champ. In all three, GCU won the first set but ACU rallied to force a third and final set.
At No. 6 singles,
Benjamin McDonald went ahead in the third set and earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win to propel the Wildcats to a 3-2 edge.
Minutes later, freshman
Tomas Tischner, who made the match-clinching point in Friday's semifinal against UT Arlington, sealed the deal for ACU again.
Tischner defeated Jonathan Da Silva at the fourth position -- 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 -- to give the Wildcats the WAC championship for the second time in their four seasons in the league. ACU also won the team title in 2022, and advanced to play Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The Wildcats will wait until Monday, April 28 to learn who, where and when they will play in this year's national tourney. The selection show will air on NCAA.com starting at 4:30 p.m. CT.
