LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - Ryann Honea's historic round at the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday powered No. 96 Abilene Christian women's golf to tie its lowest team score in a single round in program history at 6-under. The Wildcats rose three spots into second place at Wigwam Golf Club at 8-over 584 after two rounds.
No. 85 Honea, the conference's reigning champion, matched ACU's record-low individual score for a round at 5-under 67 as the Wildcats recorded the nine-team field's lowest score of the day. She tied the mark set by Jiyu Han in the second round of the A-Ga-Ming Invitational on Sept. 3, 2023, the program's debut tournament.
That round also featured ACU's record-low team score thanks to the efforts of Honea, Kate Pickrell and Sydney Williams, who were each in action on Tuesday. The Wildcats won the A-Ga-Ming Invitational to open the team's inaugural season.
Tarleton State remained atop the leaderboard at 1-over 577 after following ACU with a 5-under 283 in the second round. A nine-stroke cushion separates the Wildcats from third-place UT Arlington at 17-over 593. The Texans' Louise Depadt paces the individual field at 4-under 140.
ACU is in the field's top four for its shooting on par 3s, par 4s and par 5s. It is 6-over and 2-under on par 3s and par 5s, respectively, each of which are ranked third.
Honea jumped 11 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for third place at 2-under 142 after recording five birdies in the second round, including an eagle on hole No. 4. She logged just one bogey and leads the field in shooting on par 3s at 1-under alongside Williams. Honea's previous career-low score was 3-under, which she achieved on five occasions, most recently in the first two rounds of the Riverbend Intercollegiate on March 10-11.
Williams complemented Honea with a strong round of her own, carding a 3-under 69 to enter into a tie for fifth place at even-par 144. It marked a six-stroke improvement from her first round score, doing so with five birdies. Williams and Honea also tied in shooting 2-under on par 5s, and they each tied for fifth with six birdies apiece.
Marissa Loya showed a similar five-stroke improvement from the first round to the second, registering at even-par 72 on Tuesday. She neutralized her two bogeys with a pair of birdies while rising 10 spots into a tie for 17th with Julia Vollmer. Loya's 27 pars are second in the field.
Vollmer improved her score by a stroke at 2-over 74 behind a trio of birdies, including back-to-back ones on No. 14 and No. 15. Pickrell entered the lineup in place of Han and logged an 11-over 83 with a birdie on No. 5.
The Wildcats close out the WAC Championship on Wednesday as they look to secure a berth in an NCAA Regional. Pickrell will get ACU started at 9:40 a.m. (MT) on hole No. 1, with Loya, Vollmer, Williams and Honea to follow in 10-minute increments, respectively.
