ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis will meet UT Arlington at 1 p.m. Thursday for its first Western Athletic Conference matchup of the season at the Teague Center. The Wildcats are looking for their first eight-match winning streak since the 2018-19 season that saw them go 22-5 and capture the Southland Conference regular season crown.
ACU has been dominant over the past month since kicking off its streak with a 5-2 victory over Midwestern State on Jan. 18. In the six matches that have followed at the Teague Center, the Wildcats haven't allowed more than one point to their opponents. In their last time out, they bested former SLC foe Lamar, 6-1.
Tomas Tischner has the hot hand for ACU, having won seven singles matches in a row. He's joined by
Alejandro Verdasco and
Martin Delnido, who have both rattled off six consecutive singles wins.
In doubles,
Daniel Morozov and
Benjamin McDonald are undefeated as a duo with six wins together. The Wildcats went 3-0 on the doubles front against the Cardinals, as Verdasco and
Ethan Scribner picked up a 6-4 victory before
Merse Deli and Dennis Dutiné won, 6-3.
The Mavericks enter with a 4-5 record, having swept their last two matches with 4-0 decisions against Oral Roberts and New Mexico State. They have a matchup with A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday before heading to Abilene.
Mattia Ricci is 5-0 in singles action for UT Arlington between courts No. 4 and 5, while Andres Medus is 5-3 with a 4-1 mark at the No. 2 spot.
Meethre Barot and Pedro Sasso have teamed up to go undefeated in doubles with an 8-0 mark, including a 5-0 record on court No. 1. Ricci and Medus are 6-2 as a pair, having won their last two matches.
The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season against the Mavericks on April 3 in Arlington. The WAC Championships will also be held at the UTA Tennis Center.
