The ACU men's tennis team chose not to dip their toe into the competitive waters of the spring season. instead, their opening weekend was more like a cannonball into the deep end.
The Wildcats faced off against No. 2 TCU, No. 1 Texas, and Baylor in a span of less than 30 hours as they traversed north and central Texas.
The season began on Saturday with a match in Ft. Worth against the Horned Frogs, who won last year's NCAA Championship.
ACU's doubles team of Matheus Lima and Benjamin McDonald pushed their match to a 5-4 deficit when it was halted due to TCU winning the other two doubles matches.
In the singles competition, TCU swept the field in straight sets. In the No. 5 slot, ACU's Martin Delnido rallied after losing the first set 6-1 to force a tiebreaker in set two. Julian Alonso from TCU outlasted Delnido to win 7-5.
The Wildcats then spent Saturday night in Austin and began a twinbill along I-35 Sunday morning against the Texas Longhorns who start the spring as the No. 1 ranked team in the country.
UT showed why with three quick doubles victories. Ethan Scribner and Daniel Morozov put up the best fight, losing 6-3.
Once again Delnido had the most success in singles - winning five games against his opponent over two sets, but ultimately lost 6-2, 6-3.
The whirlwind finished 100 miles north in Waco as ACU faced Baylor at the Bears' Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
At the No. 1 doubles match, Merse Deli and Morozov only trailed 4-3 when Baylor clinched the other two ongoing matches to win the doubles point.
The Bears swept the singles slate though the Wildcats were overall more competitive than their first two team matches.
Morozov pushed his Baylor's Devin Badenhorst to a second set tiebreaker before losing in straight frames.
Dennis Dutiné lost his first set 6-1, but battled back to win the second set 7-5. Baylor's Luc Koenig won the third set tiebreaker, 10-2.
ACU continues its season on Saturday, Jan. 18 with a dual match in Dallas. The Wildcats take on host SMU starting at 10 a.m., and then go toe-to-toe with old Division II rival Midwestern State at 5 p.m.
