Field of Eight Schools Will Compete
ABILENE - The ACU women's tennis team welcomes in seven other programs for the Wildcat Invitational from Friday-Sunday at the John T.L. Jones Tennis Complex.
Players from ACU, Texas Tech, SMU, UTSA, Texas State, UTEP, New Mexico State and Tarleton will comprise a field of 45 singles players and around 20 doubles teams for the tournament.
"I feel like we have more of a complete team now, we've just got to piece it together," said head coach Bryan Rainwater. "We'll know a lot more after this weekend."
The Wildcats are made up of two seniors, five juniors and one freshman. The squad spent last weekend in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at the Aggie Invitational hosted by New Mexico State.
"There were really bright spots with Masha Vrsalovic and Olivia Sears. In the past we've been really solid in 3 through 6, but not 1 and 2 as much. They both won most of their matches," said Rainwater.
"I do feel like this is one of the deepest teams we've had. Our two transfers, Angela Del Campo and Alice Klinteby, will slide in for Maryjoe Crisologo and Andrea Guerrero [who graduated]. Angela will be able to play top 3 in the line-up, and Alice is going to be huge for us in the 5 or 6 range."
The opportunity to play a home tournament is obviously beneficial for ACU's players who don't have to disrupt their routines, but it is also good for the team.
"I think for us hosting the teams we do grows our program. It gets exposure for our girls to better players, and it brings in other teams who may want to come in during the spring season."
The Wildcat Invitational will begin each day with singles matches at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Doubles matches are expected to begin start at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
