ARLINGTON – Abilene Christian returns to the Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship match on Saturday after ending Grand Canyon's season 4-1 on Friday.
The second-seeded Wildcats face top-seed and tournament host Texas-Arlington for the league crown at noon on Saturday at the Arlington Tennis Center.
"You can't get to the final without winning today and we took care of it today," said ACU Head Coach Juan Nunez. "Not done yet, but definitely excited about how the guys did today. GCU is a great, well-coached team and they definitely pushed us and it was good to respond to that fight because tomorrow is going to be a dogfight."
ACU got the doubles point with wins by Cesar Barranquero and Dario Kmet at No. 1 and Savan Chhabra and Ethan Scribner at No. 3. Daniel Morozov and Mihaly Deli were tied in their doubles match at 4-4 when the point was clinched.
Deli scored a 6-2, 6-2 singles win at the sixth line to give ACU a 2-0 lead. After the Lopes got their lone singles win, Kmet pushed the Wildcats to the brink of the finals with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles, winning the last three games to get the second set.
Daniel Morozov got the clincher at second singles despite losing the first set. He dismissed his opponent in 6-2, 6-1 fashion to send the Cats forward.
"He didn't get any recognition as far as All-Conference but for him to do what he did after the first set shows he belongs there," Nunez said of Morozov.
Barranquero was up in the third set at No. 3 and Benjamin McDonald was locked in a tight match at No. 5 singles when play ended with those two matches unfinished.
ACU improves to 14-10 on the season.
