ABILENE – The women's tennis coaches of the Western Athletic Conference selected Abilene Christian freshman Maria Cascos as a second-team member of the WAC All-Conference squad, the league announced on Wednesday.
"It's exciting to see Maria get this award as a freshman because she's earned it and it speaks to the future of our program," said ACU Head Coach Bryan Rainwater. "I'm proud of her. She worked her tail off and she's been a model student-athlete."
Cascos, who comes from Gijon, Spain, was 13-6 this season and 8-1 against the WAC. She played most of her matches on the fourth line but also had a 4-1 mark at No. 5.
Though her award is for her singles play, she also was 7-1 with Maryjoe Crisologo against the league in doubles.
The Wildcats play in the first round of the WAC Tournament at 9 a.m. on Thursday against Grand Canyon in Arlington.
