ABILENE, Texas – The ACU football program announced times for four of this fall's home games on Monday, and the 2022 campaign begins on Sept. 1 at Wildcat Stadium with a conference matchup against Lamar, with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m. The Wildcats are entering their second season in the Western Athletic Conference, which now features three playoff teams from 2021 with the addition of Incarnate Word.
"We have one of the premier home venues in all of FCS football, and we are looking forward to welcoming fans to Wildcat Stadium for five games this year," first-year head coach Keith Patterson said. "Abilene is going to enjoy an exciting style of football that we hope brings people back every Saturday this season."
The Purple and White are back home in Week 2, hosting Prairie View A&M with another 7:00 p.m. kick. The Panthers have never made the trip to Abilene, and the only previous meeting between the two teams came in 2013, when ACU came away with a 65-45 victory behind a monster day from quarterback John David Baker and future NFL running back Charcandrick West.
September ends with a home game against Western New Mexico at 7:00 p.m., and the Big Country's Hometown Team then hits the road for back-to-back WAC contests. Southern Utah, entering their first year in the WAC, makes their first-ever trip to the Big Country for a Homecoming battle on Oct. 15, with kickoff scheduled for 3:25 p.m. as a nod to Abilene's area code.
The road slate features trips to Missouri (Sept. 17), Utah Tech, formerly Dixie State (Oct. 1), Sam Houston (Oct. 8), Incarnate Word (Oct. 22), North Dakota (Oct. 29) and longtime rival Tarleton (Nov. 12). The 2022 regular season wraps up on Nov. 19, when the Lumberjacks of SFA bring their high-powered offense, led by 2021 AFCA All-American Xavier Gipson, to Wildcat Stadium. Kickoff for that game will be announced at a later date.
