ABILENE - Abilene Christian golf moved up three places to sixth (1-over 865) during the third and final round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic hosted by the Westwood Golf Club in Houston with an 8-under 280. All five Wildcat golfers finished at or below par Tuesday as the Wildcats beat 11 schools in the 17-team field, including squads from No. 42 Arkansas State, North Texas, Rice and UTEP.
Junior Francisco Osio (4-under 212) led the way with a 3-under 69 today to go along with his 72 and 71 during Monday's first and second rounds. He tied for ninth place in a field of 96 competitors. His classmate Brian Choe (T22nd) also finished under par with a 1-under 215, while senior Alex Clouse shot a 1-under 71 today to move up 11 spots to 3-over 219. Sophomore Zane Heusel carded a 72 Tuesday and Jake Bay recorded a 71.
ACU started the two-day, three round tournament with a par 288 but slipped some in the second round with a 297 that dropped them into ninth place. But the Wildcats made up considerable ground today with 22 birdies and an eagle from Choe as he carded a three on the par-five sixth hole.
"I'm proud of the guys for coming back strong in the final round," said ACU head coach Tom Shaw. "We've started to gain a reputation for being a fast-closing team, which is a good trait. We still need to learn how to string three good rounds together without a blip in the middle. Hopefully next week will give us that opportunity."
With three players in the top four, Sam Houston State (29-under 835) claimed the team and individual medalist honors. Coming in behind them were Florida Atlantic, No. 49 Houston, Louisiana and No. 26 UTSA.
ACU will face the Bearkats once again next Monday and Tuesday at their annual Toyota Invitational, which will take place at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club. This is ACU's final regular-season event before heading to McKinney, Texas and the Stonebridge Ranch Golf Club for the Southland Conference Championships (April 26-28).
