ABILENE -- A preview of the Southland Conference Championship is coming up this week as eight (of 11) Southland men's golf teams will be competing Monday and Tuesday at the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational hosted by Walden on Lake Conroe.
The Wildcats are one of 16 teams in this year's field and will be joined by rivals Incarnate Word, McNeese, New Orleans, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin and tournament host Sam Houston State. Rounding out the field are Texas State, Wichita State, St. Thomas, Louisiana Tech, Northern Colorado, UT Arlington, Louisiana Lafayette and Baylor.
Everyone will play 36 holes Monday, starting at 8:30 a.m., and 18 on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Representing the Wildcats at this tournament are seniors Chase Allison, Jake Bay and Alex Clouse, juniors Francisco Osio and Brian Choe, and sophomore Zane Heusel.
ACU is coming off a sixth-place showing at last week's Bayou City Collegiate Classic hosted by the Westwood Golf Club. In their final round, all five Wildcat golfers finished at or below in combining for an 8-under 280. The Wildcats beat 11 schools in the 17-team field, including four conference rivals and regional foes No. 42 Arkansas State, North Texas, Rice and UTEP.
Osio (4-under 212) led the way with a 3-under 69 last Tuesday to go along with his 72 and 71 during the first and second rounds. He tied for ninth place in a field of 96 competitors. Choe (T22nd) also finished under par with a 1-under 215, while Clouse shot a 1-under 71 during his final round to move up 11 spots to 3-over 219. Heusel carded a 72 in the final round and Bay recorded a 71.
For Allison this will be his fourth tournament of the 2020-21 season and second of the spring.
This tournament is the final tune-up for Wildcat golf before heading to McKinney, Texas and the Stonebridge Ranch Golf Club for the Southland Conference Championships (April 26-28).
