ABILENE -- Abilene Christian track and field has 87 entries listed in the meet program for this weekend's Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor. This is the Wildcats' second trip to Waco, Texas in three week as they also attended the Baylor Invitational on April 3 and came home with four event titles won by Zoe Spinn (high jump), Sean Germany (triple jump), Annina Brandenburg (shot put and discus) and Denis Lagat (3,000-meter steeplechase).
All four will be competing in their respective events (and more) when the meet kicks off Friday at noon with the men's hammer throw. Saturday's slate of activities start at 10 a.m. with the men's discus.
Throwers Brandenburg and Tyler Richardson are entered in three of the meet's premier events. Both will represent the Wildcats in the shot put, while Brandenburg also will take part in the discus against highly-touted competitors from Baylor, Kansas State, Texas and Texas Tech.
The massive field also includes teams from Stephen F. Austin, TCU, Tarleton State and North Texas, where the Wildcats celebrated four wins and 15 personal records last weekend.
Brandenburg won her 15th collegiate throwing event in Denton (discus), while on the track gold-medal performances were registered by Taylor Tolen (100m), Avery Williams (400m) and Briahna Gerlach (3,000-meter steeplechase).
These three Wildcat runners will again be in action again this weekend. Tolen is entered in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Williams and Jared Williams, who finished first and second in the 400m at North Texas, will take part in their primary event and also run the first two legs of the 4x400-meter relay with Jack Marshall and Ethan Christian.
Gerlach will run the 5K Friday night along with Southland XC Champion Irene Rono, plus the steeplechase Saturday at 7:40 p.m.
Multi-athlete Jonathan Ply will compete in the high and long jumps, and go in the sprint hurdles along with Jamal January and Harrison Manuel. This duo also is entered in the 400m hurdles.
January ran a 13.94 in his most recent trip to Baylor, a time which ranks him 35th nationally.
Brandenburg is a top-25 thrower in the shot put and discus, but the highest individually ranked Wildcat on the women's side is high jumper Zoe Spinn who comes into this weekend ranked 11th behind a height of 1.79m (5' 10.5"). This PR was recorded at the Baylor Invitational.
