Biography
2021-2022: Indoors – won the WAC heptathlon with a new ACU T&F record total of 5,633 points. In the competition, JJ also set new PR’s in 5 of the 7 events – the 60 (7.31), 1000 (8.13), 60 hurdles (8.13), shot put (39-11.5/12.18) and the pole vault (15-9/4.80). Also finished 7th in the Texas Tech Open heptathlon in a highly competitive field that included 8 All-America multi-event athletes. Outdoors – continued a fantastic outdoor season by placing 5th at the prestigious Mt SAC Relays with a new PR total of 7,857 points – the 3rd best total in ACU history. The Mt SAC decathlon field included 4 1st team All-Americans and the eventual national champion. During the Mt SAC meet, JJ ended up with 3 new PR’s for events within the decathlon – 100 (11.17), javelin (187-9/57.24, becoming the #10 javelin thrower in ACU history), and a spectacular high jump of 6-11.75/2.13m that placed him #8 all-time in ACU T&F history. At the WAC championship, he placed 4th in the 110 hurdles (with a PR time of 14.14) and the high jump, plus placing 5th in the javelin. At the NCAA D-1 national meet, JJ concluded his senior season in spectacular fashion by getting 8th place with a total of 7,739 points, becoming ACU’s first male 1st team Division I All-America since ACU transitioned to D-1 8 years ago. At the national meet, JJ tied his PR in the 100 (11.17) and set a new PR of 23-1.75/7.05m in the long jump.
2020-2021: Indoors – at the SLC championships, placed 5th in the heptathlon and 7th in the high jump, also placed 6th in the Texas Tech Inv with 5,120 points. All T&F athletes received a redshirt season due to the pandemic. Outdoors – placed 2nd in the decathlon at the SLC championships with a total of 7,182 points. Also placed 3rd in the Texas Relays decathlon earlier in the season with a total of 7.165 points.
2019-2020: Indoors – redshirt season. Outdoors – season cancelled due to pandemic – all T&F athletes received a redshirt.
Before ACU: Competed for Central Arizona in the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Won the NJCAA decathlon outdoors in 2018 and was runner-up in 2019, plus winning the indoor heptathlon in 2019 and getting 4th in that event in 2018. Also attained NJCAA All-America status in the high jump, pole vault and javelin throw. Won the USATF National Jr Olympic decathlon in 2017. Competing for Dayton HS in Nevada, Jonathan won the NV 3A 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump as a HS senior. Also placed 2nd in the prestigious Arcadia Invitational decathlon in California in 2018.
Personal: Jonathan received his BS in Kinesiology in 2022. He graduated from Dayton HS in Nevada in 2018. His parents are Kevin and Lynda Ply.
