SAN ANTONIO -- Senior Alex Clouse birdied three consecutive holes over the back nine Wednesday during the third and final round of the Cabo Collegiate hosted by TPC San Antonio Oaks Course to finish 2-under 70 on the day and 10-over 226 overall.
"The Cabo tournament in San Antonio was one of the highlights in our program's history," said head coach Tom Shaw. "To be part of such an illustrious field was an experience my guys will always remember."
Clouse led the Wildcats, tying for 47th overall in a field of 88 competitors from the best schools in the country. His effort also helped the Wildcats post their best team round Wednesday at 4-over 292, a 21-stroke improvement from Tuesday and 25 strokes better than Monday.
"We had one of our best rounds of the year in Wednesday's final round," said Shaw, "and beat the teams we were paired with:Stanford (+13), Cal (+6) and Rice (+22). To beat the defending national champion Stanford Cardinal in two of three rounds is a nice takeaway for our guys. A tournament like this will hopefully pay dividends later in the spring. I'm proud of the guys for their hard work and for being wonderful ambassadors of Abilene Christian University."
ACU topped the Cardinal by seven strokes Monday and nine on Wednesday, unfortunately, the Wildcats could not dig themselves out of an early hole and placed 15th of 16 schools at +58. Rice finished behind the Wildcats at +86, while 30th-ranked Stanford edged ACU by two strokes for 14th after finishing 13 over Wednesday.
Seventh-ranked Oklahoma (-4) won the team title over No. 4 Florida State (-3) by one stroke, while individual medalist honors went to Texas A&M's Sam Bennett (-5). The Aggies placed third overall at -1 and the rest of the decorated field all completed the course well over par. Top ranked Arizona settled for a 10th place finish at +25.
Junior Francisco Osio carded a -1 under 72 Wednesday to tie for 60th place at +13, and teammate Zane Heusel was one stroke behind him at +14 after finishing 2-over today.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Dallas' Trinity Forest Golf Club for the Trinity Forest Invitational. The 7,330 yard / Par 71 course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. This year's field includes Ball State, Florida Atlantic, Lamar, Little Rock, Louisville, Kansas City, Rice, TCU, Sam Houston, SMU (#14 Golfstat on 2/24), North Texas (#18), UT Arlington and UTSA.
