ABILENE -- Junior Brian Choe and sophomore Zane Heusel were Abilene Christian golf's co-leaders this week at the Trinity Forest Invitational, tying for 28th place at 9-over 222. Both Wildcats finished under par during the back nine of Tuesday's third and final round, combining for five birdies.
No. 13 and host SMU won the team championship as it was the only club of 15 to finish under par at 17 under 835, while individual medalist honors went to Little Rock's Anton Albers (-7).
The Wildcats tied Rice for 11th place (+39, 891) with rounds of 293, 303 and 295. They finished one stroke behind Southland Conference rival Lamar and ahead of SMU's second team, UT Arlington and Ball State.
"We did not play as well as we hoped," said head golf coach Tom Shaw. "After leading ranked teams like TCU and Louisville after round one, we steadily bled strokes with poor performance on the greens. This was a learning experience for sure, and we'll be better for it."
Also competing this week for the Wildcats were Francisco Osio (+10), Alex Clouse (+15) and freshman Charlie Jackson (+18).
ACU has a quick turnaround to its next tournament, the Pinehurst (N.C.) Intercollegiate, which runs Friday to Sunday. This year's field features Belmont, Butler, Dayton, DePaul, Elon, George Washington, Longwood, Marshall, Old Dominion and Xavier.
"We're definitely excited to head to one of the historic venues for golf in America - Pinehurst, N.C.," said Shaw. "It will be a unique test for our team to experience golf in the Carolinas. I can't think of a more different environment for our West Texas boys, but we are up for the challenge."
