PINEHURST, N.C. - Abilene Christian golf went from 11th to second place during Sunday's final round action at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate after being the only one of 12 teams today to finish at par (284).
All other clubs finished 7-over par.
ACU's team score today also was the lowest of the three rounds by any school. Team champion Dayton on Saturday had a 5-over 289, as did the defending tournament champions from Elon.
"It was a good sign that the team came to prove something today," said head coach Tom Shaw. "It demonstrated the fight that I know these guys have ... and after a very lackluster two rounds, the guys were determined to come out fast and they did so. I think it bodes well for our next tournament."
The Wildcats, who were playing their second tournament of the week, were +19 Friday and +16 Saturday before solving the 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8 course today as junior Francisco Osio finished 4-under 67 and senior Alex Clouse was even par to tie for second place at 4-over 217.
Clouse carded a 2-over 73 for the first two rounds. Meanwhile Osio's effort today propelled him into 11th following rounds of 79 and 75 and it was the lowest single round (-4) for any of the tournament's 71 competitors. He also was one of only three individuals to finish under par Sunday.
Clouse and Osio both recorded eight birdies, tied for second most at the tournament.
Brian Choe and Zane Heusel (37 pars) also had their best rounds Sunday with a pair of 2-over 73s, while freshman Charlie Jackson recorded a 6-over 77.
Dayton hung on to beat the Wildcats (35-over 887) for the team title by two stokes at 33-over par. Finishing right behind ACU were teams from Wofford (+36) and Belmont (+37).
Butler's Logan Sabins was the individual medalist at 1-over 214.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Kerrville, Texas and Comanche Trace for The Big Texan hosted by UTRGV.
"We may have overloaded the schedule a bit with this many tournaments in a short period of time but it is hard to turn down invitations to special places like Pinehurst," added Shaw. "Also, what this busy schedule provides is the opportunity to diversify our players' skill sets and develop them into more complete golfers."
