ABILENE - Abilene Christian golf won its first tournament of the 2020-21 season Tuesday, beating 11 other teams in comeback fashion to capture The Big Texan at 4-under 860. They were the only team to finish under par.
Four of ACU's five golfers today finished at or below par in posting a tournament low round of 10-under 278, which allowed the Wildcats to jump from third to first place and eclipse both runner-up and host UTRGV (+1) and New Mexico State (+2).
"It was a terrific team win today," said ACU head coach Tom Shaw. "We dug ourselves a hole in the first round, but the guys rallied to finish strong in the second. We knew we had to come out today and establish ourselves on the leaderboard with some quick birdies. We did just that and climbed our way back into contention quickly. The guys kept the pressure on all day and finally took the lead with a few holes to go and maintained it to then end."
Senior Alex Clouse won his second tournament in as many years with rounds of 70, 72 and 68 on the 7,059 yard course at Kerrville's Comanche Trace. He came into this morning's final round tied for third, but birdied five of his first 11 holes and carded a two on the par-3 17th to hold off teammate Zane Heusel (-5) and New Orleans' Florian Moosmeier (-5) for individual medalist honors. His 14 birdies led the field.
Heusel, meanwhile, had four birdies today plus an eagle (one of three this week) on the par-5 4th to finish the third round at 3-under 69. In the previous two rounds he posted a 77 (+5) followed by a 65 (-7), which was the lowest individual round of the entire tournament by two strokes, setting up the best collegiate finish of the Edmond, Okla. native's young career.
Heusel additionally led all players with a 4.08 (-11) on Par 5s, while his team averaged a tournament best 4.67 strokes (-20). ACU also led the way with 51 birdies and three eagles.
"I'm thrilled for Alex Clouse to get another victory and very excited about the progress that Zane Heusel has displayed the spring," said Shaw. "To shoot 10 under in his last two rounds shows you what kind of fire power Zane brings to the lineup. Alex and Zane battled all day both making clutch putts on the last hole, with Alex capping off the win with a 15-foot birdie putt."
Senior Jake Bay of Shattuck, Okla. moved up nine places to 12th Tuesday with a final round 3-under 69 that featured five birdies, and junior Francisco Osio cracked the top 15 with and overall score of 4-over 220. He was +4 in Monday's round one and even par the next two.
Sophomore Logan Diomede of Argyle, Texas tied for 29th among the 55-player field, and today he equaled his best round from Monday with a 2-over 74.
"I am probably most proud of Logan Diomede, who was suffering from food poisoning and turned in a solid round for us," said Shaw. "We gave him the option of not playing because he was sick all day. It goes to show you how tough he is ... willing to do whatever he could to help his team win the golf tournament today."
This tournament marks the fifth team victory for ACU under head coach Tom Shaw. The Wildcats won twice during his first year of 2014-15 followed by the 2018 Colin Montgomerie HBU Invitational and 2020 La Tour Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls.
Clouse was the individual medalist at La Tour with an incredible program record-tying 14-under 202 just prior to the Wildcats' grand opening of the Byron Nelson Clubhouse in Feb. 2020.
The Wildcats return to action in two weeks (April 5-6) for the Rice-hosted Bayou Intercollegiate at the Westwood Golf Club in Houston.
