ABILENE -- Abilene Christian golf returns to action Monday and Tuesday for the Bayou Intercollegiate at the Westwood Golf Club (Par 72 • 7,184 Yards) in Houston. This two-day, 54-hole tournament is co-hosted by Rice, No. 49 Houston and the defending champions from Sam Houston, who won the 2019 edition of this event with three players in the top 10.
Teams will play 36 holes Monday and 18 on Tuesday. ACU's opposition includes the three host schools plus No. 42 Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Louisiana, McNeese State, New Mexico State, Nicholls, North Texas, South Alabama, UTEP, No. 26 UTSA and Texas State.
This is the Wildcats' first appearance on the links since winning The Big Texan (March 22-23) at Comanche Trace in Kerrville by five strokes against a field of 10 teams. ACU was the only team to finish under par (4-under 860) after completing the third round with a magnificent 10-under 278. This final-day effort pushed the Wildcats from third to first on the team leaderboard, surpassing runner-up UTRGV (+1) and New Mexico State (+2).
Senior Alex Clouse won his second career tournament with rounds of 70, 72 and 68 on the 7,059 yard course. He came into the final round tied for third, but birdied five of his first 11 holes and carded a two on the par-3 17th to hold off teammate Zane Heusel (-5) and New Orleans' Florian Moosmeier (-5) for individual medalist honors. His 14 birdies led the field.
Clouse and Heusel will again compete this week, and will be joined in Houston by juniors Brian Choe and Francisco Osio, and senior Jake Bay, who moved up nine places to 12th thanks to a final round 3-under 69 that featured five birdies. Osio also cracked the top 15 at Comanche Trace with an overall score of 4-over 220.
For Choe this will be his first appearance since tying for 22nd place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, which took place March 12-14.
