ABILENE – Sophomore Natalie Jones and senior Christina Arteaga combined for 13 shot attempts Sunday at Elmer Gray Stadium, and the ACU soccer team out shot Southeastern Louisiana 28-8, but despite the lopsided difference, the game ended in a scoreless tie. ACU (8-5-2, 4-3-1 SLC) dominated the play all afternoon on a beautiful day in Abilene, but just could not come up with the score to win it. It was a 13-3 shot advantage in the first half and an 11-0 edge in the second half, but SLU played good defense and recorded six saves to send it to overtime. The Lady Lions (3-2-3, 3-2-3 SLC) held a 5-3 edge in shots in the first overtime, but the Wildcat defense was up to the challenge to preserve the tie.
Southland Significance
The tie gives each team a point to add to their league total, and ACU currently sits with 13 points and in fifth place. Northwestern State (19 pts), Central Arkansas (9 pts), and UIW (14 pts) sit on the schedule to close the year, with opportunity to move up next week.
The Numbers
- Despite the 28-8 lead in shot attempts, it was just a 7-5 edge in shots on frame. 14 of the 21 shot attempts not on frame were blocked, as SLU swarmed defensively.
- ACU led 9-5 in corner kicks.
- The Wildcats tallied 59 shots in two games over the weekend.
- ACU held possession for 59% of the game.
- Jones led the way with seven shot attempts, while Arteaga tallied six.
- Faith Husbenet recorded four shot attempts, and Megan Paul and Brianna Diaz each tallied three shots.
- Erin Smith earned her 14th career shutout, tying her with Rachel Johnson for the most in program history.
- It was also ACU's sixth shutout of the season.
Up Next
- ACU hits the road next weekend for a Friday matchup in Natchitoches, La. against Northwestern State, and closes the weekend in Conway, Ark. on Sunday against Central Arkansas. ACU has one home game left on the schedule, an April 9 date with UIW.
