FRISCO, Texas – Abilene Christian's Jonathan Sheehy Tuesday was voted Southland Conference Men's Player of the Week.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
Sheehy was one of two Wildcats to come out of singles play unscathed last week, winning both of his top-line matches as ACU split their contests with a 5-2 loss to Valparaiso and a 5-1 win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday. He and doubles partner Jackson Fine went 1-1 on the week.
Though Sheehy and Fine dropped their doubles match against Valparaiso, Sheehy won his singles contest in straight sets, edging Brandon Ancona 7-5 in the first frame before putting him away 6-4 in the final set. Sheehy and Fine redeemed themselves with a 6-3 win over their Prairie View A&M counterparts, and Sheehy cruised to a second singles victory, defeating the Panthers' Xavier Lawrence 6-4, 6-0. He leads the team with nine singles wins this season.
The Wildcats (8-6) prepare for four matches this week, beginning with a road match at UMKC at 2 p.m. CT Thursday. ACU plays a Saturday doubleheader against Northwestern Missouri State and Wichita State before wrapping up the weekend against Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. Sunday in Stillwater, Okla.
