ABILENE – The 2019 Southland Conference preseason rankings reflected the closeness of last year's standings as three schools received at least one first-place vote and a mere 42 points separated the second to seventh-ranked teams.
Nicholls (7-2), which won the league's regular-season crowd by a half game over Incarnate Word (6-2), collected 20 of 22 first-place votes to finish well ahead in the poll with 200 points. One of those Colonel's defeats came against the Wildcats, who ranked seventh with 112 points and one first place vote. The other first-place nod went to the third-ranked Cardinals (150).
Central Arkansas pulled in 154 points to place second as the Bears were one of four teams (along with ACU, McNeese and Sam Houston State) last season to finish with a 5-4 record.
The Bearkats finished fourth in the poll with 146 points followed by Lamar with 123 and McNeese with 114. Rounding out the poll were Southeastern Louisiana (71), Stephen F. Austin (63), Northwestern State (56) and Houston Baptist (21).
The Wildcats last season lost by a field goal at both McNeese and SFA before rattling off four-consecutive wins vs. Nicholls, Southeastern La., Northwestern State and Sam Houston State.
ACU's nine-game Southland Conference slate begins Sept. 14 at Central Arkansas, which turned the Wildcats back, 16-7, in last year's season finale. The Wildcats will play at Lamar this season on Oct. 5 in place of the Demons. ACU's last meeting vs. the Cardinals took place in 2016.
