ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis ran its season-best winning streak to nine matches with a 4-1 win Wednesday vs. Florida A&M, but dropped its nightcap at 41st-ranked Florida State, 6-1, at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. The Wildcats are now 14-4 on the year and 3-1 on their spring break road trip, which concludes Saturday with a 6 p.m. dual at No. 37 Arkansas.
Freshman Dimitris Azoides was the Wildcats lone singles double winner of the day. He first defeated Rattler Rodney Sturgis, 6-1, 6-0, and later held off FSU's Juan Martin Jalif in a supertrebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8), in improving to 13-5 this spring. The mid-year addition has won nine of his last 10 matches with five wins apiece at the No. 3 and 4 positions.
Senior Josh Sheehy, who earlier today was voted Southland Conference Player of the Week, is second to Azoides with 11 wins as his first match vs. Florida A&M was left unfinished, while his second decision was a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to No. 99 Lucas Poullain of Florida State. Sheehy just cracked the singles rankings last Tuesday at No. 100.
Despite dropping five of six singles matches at Florida State, the Wildcats' singles' winning percentage remains an impressive .644 (67-37). Its 14 doubles combinations are 26-19 (.578) with Riley Tran leading the way with a 10-2 record through four partnerships. Tran today won at No. 3 vs. Florida A&M with Nikolas Moceanu and had his FSU No. 2 line match with Sheehy abandoned after the home team won at the No. 1 and 3 positions.
