ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis improved to 7-3 on the season following its doubleheader sweep of in-state rivals Trinity and Tyler. The Wildcats defeated the 17th-ranked Tigers (DIII), 7-0 before topping the NJCAA's No. 1 program from Tyler, 5-2.
ACU's seven singles competitors produced a combined record of 11-1 (.917) with five players compiling a 2-0 record: freshmen Dmitris Azoides and Riley Tran, senior Nikolas Moceanu, and brothers Josh and Jonathan Sheehy, who each went undefeated at the top two positions. Interestingly, all five of these competitors are tied for the team lead in victories with six.
Josh defeated No. 30 Jordan Pitts of Trinity 6-1, 6-3 and third-ranked Marcus Walters of Tyler, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, while Jonathan scored wins over Wilson Lambeth, 6-2, 6-4 and second-ranked Alex Parker, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in extending his personal winning streak to six. He won four matches last weekend in winning Southland Conference Player of the Week honors.
ACU's combined doubles record was a modest 3-3. Moceanu and Tran won their two matches together at the No. 2 line in improving to 4-1 on the spring, and the tandem of Jackson Fine and Sebastian Langdon defeated Trinity's Cameron Kimbrill and Christian Settles, 6-1, in their season debut together.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Colorado Springs for three weekend (Feb. 8-9) dual matches vs. Colorado State Pueblo, Air Force and Montana.
